Use Chats on Camelo
Chats on Camelo are a powerful way to communicate casually and instantly.
You can use Chats to serve the type of workplace communication you need, for instance:
- Managers can send quick announcements to everyone in the workplace.
- Members of specific teams can chat via custom channels.
- Coworkers can send private messages to discuss schedules and work.
Notes
- While Message Boards are more suitable for announcements or long, permanent discussions, Chats are more useful for quick and real-time conversations.
Channels
A channel on Camelo is a chat space for members who have been added to that space. Channels keep communication focused and only certain members can receive related work information.
To view all chat channels in your workplace, go to the Inbox tab at the bottom of your screen. Within the Chats tab, you’ll see a list of all chat channels available. The 3 default channels include Everyone, Announcements, Mai from Camelo.
Default chat channels
Everyone: Chat channel for everyone in the workplace
The Everyone channel on Camelo is a public channel where everyone in your team can share and receive the same information. All team members will be added to this channel once they join your business account. Everyone receives notifications of new messages from this channel.
The Everyone channel is pinned to the top of the Inbox and you can’t delete it.
Announcements: Send announcements to employees
The Announcements channel is where management can send announcements to employees. All employees receive notifications of new messages from this channel.
Mai from Camelo: Chat with the support team
If you need support while using Camelo, send a message to Mai from Camelo, and you’ll get direct support from the Camelo team.
Create new chat channel
You can create chat channels for different teams, departments, locations, projects, or topics.
💡 For example, you can create a channel for the Front Desk team, then add front desk employees to this channel. Every time you want to message your front desk team, you can go straight to the Front Desk channel.
- From the left navigation bar, click Inbox to open your inbox.
- Click the button within the Channels section, then select Create a new channel.
- Fill in channel details.
- Channel Name
- Description: What the channel is about and for.
- Private Channel: Toggle this on if you only want certain members to join the channel.
- Channel Members: Members who can view and send messages in the channel.
- Click Save when you’re done.
- Go to the Inbox tab at the bottom of the screen and go to Chats tab.
- Tap the + button in the top-right corner.
- Tap Create a new chat channel.
- Fill in the details of the channel:
- Enter a name and a description for the channel. Be specific so your team members know what the channel is about.
- Toggle Make private on if you only want certain members to join the channel.
- Tap + Add more and select the members you want to add to the channel, then tap Done.
- Tap Create in the top-right corner.
- Go to the Inbox tab at the bottom of the screen and go to Chats tab.
- Tap the + button in the top-right corner.
- Tap Create a new chat channel.
- Fill in the details of the channel:
- Enter a name and a description for the channel. Be specific so your team members know what the channel is about.
- Toggle Make private on if you only want certain members to join the channel.
- Tap + Add more and select the members you want to add to the channel, then tap Done.
- Tap Create in the top-right corner.
Add people to a channel
- From the left navigation bar, click Inbox to open your inbox. On the left side, you’ll see a list of channels you’ve created before.
- Click the channel you want to add people in.
- Click the button in the top-right corner, then click Edit Channel.
- Select more people under the Channel Members field.
- Click Save when you’re done.
- Go to the Inbox tab at the bottom of the screen and go to Chats tab.
- Select the channel you want to add new people to.
- Tap ••• in the top-right corner of the screen.
- At Members section, tap Add more.
- Select the members you want to add to the channel, then tap Done.
- Go to the Inbox tab at the bottom of the screen and go to Chats tab.
- Select the channel you want to add new people to.
- Tap ••• in the top-right corner of the screen.
- At Members section, tap Add more.
- Select the members you want to add to the channel, then tap Done.
Browse and join a channel
- From the left navigation bar, click Inbox to open your inbox.
- Click the button within the Channels section, then select Browse channels. You’ll see a list of accessible channels in your workplace.
- Hover over the channel you want to join, then click Join.
- Go to the Inbox tab at the bottom of the screen and go to Chats tab.
- Tap Others (the one with the search icon).
- Type the name of the channel you want to look for in the Search bar, or browse the list of existing channels.
- If you want to join a channel, simply tap that channel from the list.

View and edit a channel’s details
- From the left navigation bar, click Inbox to open your inbox. On the left side, you’ll see a list of channels you’ve created before.
- Click the channel you want to edit details.
- Click the button in the top-right corner, then click Edit Channel.
- Make changes and click Save when you’re done.
- From the Inbox tab, go to Chats tab, and select the channel you want to view/edit.
- Tap ••• in the top-right corner.
- Tap Edit in the top-right corner.
- Make changes and tap Save to save the changes.
- From the Inbox tab, go to Chats tab, and select the channel you want to view/edit.
- Tap ••• in the top-right corner.
- Tap Edit in the top-right corner.
- Make changes and tap Save to save the changes.
Leave a channel
When a channel is no longer relevant to your communication purposes, you can leave that channel.
- From the left navigation bar, click Inbox to open your inbox. On the left side, you’ll see a list of channels you’ve joined before.
- Click the channel you want to leave.
- Click the button in the top-right corner, then click Leave This Channel.
- From the Inbox tab, go to Chats tab, select the channel you want to leave.
- Tap ••• in the top-right corner and select Leave This Channel.
- From the Inbox tab, go to Chats tab, select the channel you want to leave.
- Tap ••• in the top-right corner and select Leave This Channel.
Archive a channel
- From the left navigation bar, click Inbox to open your inbox. On the left side, you’ll see a list of channels you’ve joined before.
- Click the channel you want to archive.
- Click the button in the top-right corner, then click Archive This Channel.
- From the Inbox tab, go to Chats tab, select the channel you want to archive.
- Tap ••• in the top-right corner and select Archive This Channel.
- From the Inbox tab, go to Chats tab, select the channel you want to archive.
- Tap ••• in the top-right corner and select Archive This Channel.
Direct messages
Besides sending messages to chat channels, you can also send private direct messages to a specific person.
📌 If you’ve already messaged someone before, the conversation will be listed under the Direct Messages section.
Start a new direct message
- From the left navigation bar, click Inbox to open your inbox. On the left sidebar, click the button next to Direct Messages.
- Within the To field, type to find and select the person you want to start a direct message.
- Type your message and click Send.
You can start a chat with someone from the Inbox or the My Team page.
Start a chat from Inbox
- Go to the Inbox tab at the bottom of the screen.
- Select Others to browse a channel.
- Search the name of the person you want to start a chat, then tap the name.
- If this is the first time you message that member, tap Start a private chat.
Start a chat from My Team
- Go to the Menu tab at the bottom of the screen, select My Team.
- Select the member you want to contact, then select Message.
- If this is the first time you message that member, tap Start a private chat.
You can start a chat with someone from the Inbox or the My Team page.

- Go to the Inbox tab at the bottom of the screen.
- Select Others to browse a channel.
- Search the name of the person you want to start a chat, then tap the name.
- If this is the first time you message that member, tap Start a private chat.
Start a chat from My Team
- Go to the Menu tab at the bottom of the screen, select My Team.
- Select the member you want to contact, then select Message.
- If this is the first time you message that member, tap Start a private chat.
Use Chats on Camelo
Send a photo
- From the left navigation bar, click Inbox to open your inbox. Go to the conversation you want to send a photo.
- Within the message box, click .
- Select the photo you want to send and when you’re done, click Send.
- From the Inbox and within the Chats tab, tap a conversation.
- Tap the message box and tap .
- Select the photo you want to send and tap Done.
- (Optional) Type your message you want to send along with the photo in the box.
- When you’re done, tap Send.
- From the Inbox and within the Chats tab, tap a conversation.
- Tap the message box and tap .
- Select the photo you want to send and tap Done.
- (Optional) Type your message you want to send along with the photo in the box.
- When you’re done, tap Send.
Message reactions
You can react to messages in a chat. An emoji reaction can be a quick way to respond to a mesage. Everyone in the chat can view reactions.
- Hover over a message.
- Click the reaction emoji you want.
The reaction emoji appears under the message in highlighted purple. You can click the emoji to remove the reaction, click the to add another emoji reaction, or hover over an emoji to view who reacted.

Read receipts
You can check whether your messages have been delivered and seen by looking at the icons on the right side of the message:
- : Your message has been delivered.
- Small profile photo of recipient: The recipient has seen your message.
In a group chat, you can tap and hold a message, then tap Seen by … to view the people who have seen your message.

Copy a message to clipboard
- Hover over a message.
- Click the button.
- Click Copy Message.
- Tap and hold a message.
- Tap Tap to copy.
- Tap and hold a message.

Delete a message
You can delete a message on Camelo, but other users will see a “This message was removed” placeholder.
- Hover over a message.
- Click the button.
- Click Delete Message.
- Tap and hold a message.

Mute a chat
Click the Mute button in the top-right corner of a chat to stop receiving notifications from the chat.
- Within a chat, tap the button in the top-right corner.
- Toggle off Notifications to stop receiving notifications from the chat.
